Western Australia Opens New Stream for International Students

Last Monday, Western Australia recently opened up a new pathway for international students seeking permanent residency.

The Graduate Occupation List (GOL) is a brand-new graduate stream available for the Western Australian State nomination, particularly the Skilled Nominated visa or the Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa.

Eligibility for the new graduate stream requires an international student to have studied in Western Australia at a Western Australia university for at least two (2) years, an available occupation on the Graduate Occupation List, a full-time job offer for more than twelve (12) months, and must be able to prove ‘proficient’ English.

Not all degree qualifications will have access to the occupations on the GOL.

Access to all occupations on the Graduate Occupation List is available to Master’s and Ph.D. graduates only, with no work experience required. Bachelor’s and other higher degree holders may only be able to access a limited number of occupations on the GOL, and require at least one (1) year of Australian work experience in the nominated (or closely related) occupation or at least three (3) years of overseas work experience within the last ten (10) years.

According to the announcement, the university qualification in Western Australia does not need to correspond to the occupation an applicant may wish to nominate from the GOL for State nomination.

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds. They must also demonstrate proof of proficient English, unless holding a passport from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the United States, Canada, and New Zealand.
